Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called on Iran Monday to seek a diplomatic solution following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks.

Takaichi made the remarks during a session of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, stressing the need for negotiations to reduce tensions in the region.

She emphasized that Japan considers Iran’s nuclear weapons development unacceptable and urged Tehran to stop actions that destabilize the Middle East, including attacks on neighboring countries.

The prime minister refrained from commenting on the legality of the U.S. strike, saying she had no detailed information on whether the action was taken in self-defense.

Japan has maintained long-standing diplomatic relations with Iran, while the United States remains its primary military and strategic ally.

Takaichi noted the importance of Japan-U.S. cooperation, highlighting her planned meeting with US President Donald Trump on March 19 during her upcoming trip to the United States.

Officials said Japan seeks to balance its engagement with Iran while strengthening ties with the United States amid escalating regional tensions.

Takaichi reiterated Japan’s commitment to promoting stability in the Middle East through dialogue, diplomacy, and coordination with key international partners.
