Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi called on Iran Monday to maintain safety in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Motegi raised the issue during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Japan Peyman Saadat, emphasizing the importance of securing vital shipping routes in the region.
He also stressed that Iran’s development of nuclear weapons is unacceptable and urged Tehran to stop actions that destabilize the Middle East, including attacks on neighboring countries.
At a separate meeting with Israeli Ambassador to Japan Gilad Cohen, Motegi expressed Tokyo’s serious concern over the worsening security situation in the region.
The foreign minister said Japan is ready to take diplomatic measures to help calm tensions as soon as possible.
Officials noted that Japan has been closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and maintaining communication with both Iranian and Israeli representatives.
Motegi reiterated Japan’s commitment to regional stability and the protection of international shipping lanes through dialogue and diplomacy.
He emphasized that continued international cooperation is essential to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of civilians and commercial traffic in the Gulf.
