The Japanese Embassy in Manila has extended the deadline for applications to the 2026 MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Research Scholarship program until May 30.
This extension applies only to the research category, while applications for undergraduate, specialized training, and college of technology tracks officially closed on May 23.
The research scholarship gives qualified Filipinos the chance to stay in Japan for 18 or 24 months to conduct independent research under the supervision of a Japanese professor.
“Applicants must find a Japanese professor willing to supervise their research,” the embassy noted. They are advised to visit websites of Japanese universities to search for professors in their preferred field of study.
The embassy clarified that this does not guarantee final placement with the same professor, but applicants may contact professors directly once they pass the first screening.
