Japan and the European Union have agreed to expand coordination on regulating social media and other digital platforms following talks held in Brussels.

The understanding was reached during the fourth ministerial meeting under the Japan EU Digital Partnership framework, where both sides discussed aligning policies on online governance.

Officials said regulators from Japan and the EU would enhance dialogue on addressing illegal content online and improving transparency in how platform rules are enforced.

The agreement also covered broader areas tied to economic security, including data flows and communications infrastructure.

Both parties identified emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing as key sectors for continued collaboration.

Representing Japan at the meeting were Yoshimasa Hayashi, Hisashi Matsumoto, and Toshiyuki Ochi.

A joint statement adopted after the discussions outlined the need for deeper cooperation in managing technological risks while promoting innovation.

At a press briefing, Henna Virkkunen said partnerships with countries that share similar values remain vital in addressing challenges in the digital space.
