Volleyball fans are in for a thrilling reunion on and off the court as former PVL import Jang Bualee, now an assistant coach for Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima, prepares to face Alyssa Valdez and the Creamline Cool Smashers in the AVC Women’s Club Volleyball Championship quarterfinals on Thursday.
While the matchup marks a crucial game for both clubs, it also brings a personal edge for Bualee, who once shared the court with Valdez during her playing years in the Philippines.
“I think Alyssa, she is stronger and she is very smart. I know her since she was young and until now, she’s still playing,” said Bualee, who played in the PVL for San Sebastian and BaliPure under Coach Roger Gorayeb.
Valdez, showing renewed fire, impressed in Creamline’s opening win over Jordan’s Al Naser Club, tallying 10 points on seven attacks, two aces, and a block.
Now a strategist rather than a scorer, Bualee is laser-focused on breaking down her former teammate’s game.
“I changed my position, I’m a coach now. Maybe I can help my team a little bit on how Alyssa plays,” she shared. “We have to practice and it’s our homework to know how Alyssa plays.”
But amid the high-stakes showdown, the Thai mentor also welcomed the nostalgic reunion with Coach Gorayeb and veteran setter Chie Saet, both of whom she worked closely with during her stint in the Philippines.
“I’m very happy to see him [Coach Gorayeb] again. I messaged him, ‘Coach, are you coming to approach me?’ He said, ‘yes, of course,’” Bualee said with a smile.
As Creamline and Nakhon Ratchasima prepare to collide, expect the battle to be equal parts tactics, talent, and a touch of sentiment. All eyes will be on Valdez—and Bualee’s game plan to stop her.
