BAGHDAD – The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, conducted separate meetings yesterday with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh to address the escalating situation in Syria.
During his discourse with Araghchi, al-Sudani emphasized the importance of bilateral relations and regional developments, particularly concerning the situation in Syria, as stated by the media office of al-Sudani.
Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s official and unwavering stance in support of Syria’s unity, security, and stability, highlighting the imperative of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, as noted in the statement.
Additionally, the Iraqi Prime Minister reiterated his nation’s commitment to ongoing intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the crisis in Syria.
In a separate statement following his meeting with Sabbagh, al-Sudani underscored Iraq’s persistent political and diplomatic initiatives aimed at maintaining security in Syria, which is regarded as a crucial factor in ensuring the security of neighboring countries.
Al-Sudani further called upon neighboring Arab nations to coordinate their efforts in addressing regional challenges, particularly in light of the current developments in Syria.
Yesterday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein convened a trilateral meeting with Araghchi and Sabbagh to discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria and its ramifications for neighboring countries.
A joint statement released after the meeting indicated that the three ministers expressed shared concerns regarding the impact of the serious situation in Syria on their nations, noting its threat to the security of their populations and the broader region.
The statement condemned all forms of terrorism, as well as the ongoing Israeli assaults on Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon. It also emphasized the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
In a joint press conference that followed the meeting, Hussein remarked that Syria’s security is interlinked with the security of the region, declaring, “We will advocate for an urgent ministerial-level meeting of the Arab League and utilize all available diplomatic means to achieve stability in the Syrian situation.”
For his part, Araghchi stated at the press conference that the international community must lend its support to the regional efforts against terrorism, particularly in Syria. Sabbagh asserted that terrorists are infringing upon the resolutions established by the United Nations and the UN Security Council, adding that the Syrian army is diligently fulfilling its obligation to repel these terrorist attacks.
