The death toll from severe flooding in India’s northeastern state of Assam rose to 78 as rescue and relief operations continued in affected communities, officials said.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said it continued to monitor conditions across the state while emergency teams assisted displaced residents.
Officials said floodwaters had started to recede in some areas, but damaged homes, muddy roads and disrupted services prevented many residents from returning home.
More than 300,000 people remained affected across seven districts, according to local reports, down from the larger number displaced during the peak of the flooding.
Relief centers continued to provide temporary shelter, food and other essential supplies to families forced to leave their communities.
Authorities also searched for missing residents and assessed damage to houses, roads, farms and other infrastructure.
The disaster management agency urged the public to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall and follow official weather and evacuation advisories.
India’s weather agency continued to issue rainfall warnings for several areas as Assam faced the risk of further flooding and landslides during the monsoon season.
