Increased police presence along Marilaque Highway following viral motorcycle crash

The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP HPG) has announced plans to increase its presence and patrols along the Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon (Marilaque) Highway following a viral video of a fatal motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a vlogger and injured four others.

The tragic accident occurred when two motorcycles collided and hit a group of bystanders, underscoring the growing concern over safety along the popular scenic highway.

According to HPG spokesperson Lt. Dhame Malang, the incident prompted HPG Director Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta will deploy 10 to 15 officers from highway patrol teams in Laguna, Cavite, and Quezon to reinforce the current 17 officers assigned to Rizal’s Highway Patrol Team (HPT).

“We will ensure our presence is felt day and night, especially in high-traffic areas frequented by riders, such as Palo Alto and Devil’s Curve,” Malang said during a press briefing at Camp Crame. These sections of the 115-kilometer highway are known hotspots for accidents due to sharp curves and reckless driving.

He further assured the public that additional patrols would be concentrated on weekends when the highway experiences a surge in motorcycle riders and tourists.

Marilaque highway accidents
The viral crash marks the 13th recorded incident along Marilaque Highway from January 1 to January 28, 2025. Data from the HPG revealed that in 2024, 158 accidents occurred along the highway, with 110 incidents concentrated in the Palo Alto and Mount Masungi areas.

Many of these accidents involved motorcycles, as the highway is a favorite route for riders due to its picturesque views and winding roads. However, the scenic route’s challenging terrain, overspeeding, and daredevil stunts have led to frequent mishaps.

In response to the recent accident and the alarming statistics, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has vowed stricter traffic law enforcement. LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II directed the agency’s Calabarzon office to work with the PNP and local government units (LGUs) to crack down on reckless riders along the Marilaque Highway.

“We have to put a stop to this practice because it endangers the lives of not only the motorcycle riders but also other road users,” Mendoza said in a statement. “We will make our presence felt in the area to go after those engaging in daredevil stunts and other dangerous riding exhibitions.”

The HPG also reminded motorists that overspeeding is prohibited under the Land Transportation and Traffic Code and warned that violations will result in penalties.

Ensuring public safety on Marilaque Highway
The Marilaque Highway, a gateway to tourist destinations in Rizal, Laguna, and Quezon, is infamous for its steep curves, blind spots, and lack of enforcement in some areas. While it remains a favorite among motorcycle enthusiasts, the highway has become synonymous with frequent accidents, prompting calls for heightened safety measures.

With the added patrols and stricter monitoring, authorities hope to reduce accidents and ensure safer highway travel. Riders and road users are encouraged to follow traffic laws, avoid overspeeding, and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
