The Ilocos Sur provincial government reiterated the seasonal ban on catching goby fry, locally known as ipon, throughout August to protect the species during its peak migration period.
The Provincial Fisheries Division said Provincial Ordinance No. 14-03 prohibits the harvesting of goby fry during August and February.
Officials said the closed season allows the young fish to move upstream, mature and reproduce, helping replenish stocks and sustain future catches.
The measure is also intended to protect the long-term livelihood of fishing communities that depend on the seasonal harvest.
Ipon is a sought-after local delicacy that can sell for as much as Php 1,000 per kilogram during its first appearance in the season.
Fishery law enforcers, police, deputized fish wardens and Bantay Dagat teams will monitor river mouths and coastal areas where goby fry are commonly caught.
Those who violate the ban may face penalties under the provincial ordinance.
The provincial government urged fishers and traders to comply with the closed season to help preserve the resource and maintain a sustainable supply in the coming years.
