LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The holiday spirit soared high at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) as it lit up its iconic Christmas tree on December 4, officially opening the season under the theme A Christmas of Light and Hope for Every Home. The Terminal 1 Airport Village transformed into a festive haven, radiating warmth, color, and the familiar joy of homecomings.

Long regarded as the premier tourism gateway to Visayas and Mindanao, MCIA becomes the emotional crossroads for thousands of reunions every Christmas. This year’s celebration honors that role—highlighting family, resilience, and the uplifting spirit shared in Cebuano homes everywhere.

Athanasios Titonis, Chief Executive Officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC), underscored the airport’s mission to offer more than travel convenience, but a meaningful experience.

“At MCIA, we strive to be more than just a transit point; we are a place where journeys connect and stories begin. This year’s theme reflects our commitment to bringing warmth, comfort, and positivity to every passenger. We want this tree to serve not just as a decoration, but as a beacon of optimism for the coming year.”

At the heart of the celebration stands a towering, sustainably crafted Christmas tree embellished with ornaments inspired by Cebu’s rich culture. The lighting ceremony gathered government partners, airline representatives, airport stakeholders, employees, and media, signaling the start of MCIA’s lineup of holiday activities.

Julius Neri Jr., General Manager and CEO of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), emphasized the season’s unifying spirit.

“The lighting of our Christmas tree is a cherished tradition that brings the entire airport community together. It reminds us that wherever our passengers may be headed, the spirit of Cebu goes with them. We are proud to share this symbol of hope with the world and wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday season.”

Passengers traveling through MCIA in the coming weeks will enjoy a festive lineup that includes musical performances, themed photo spots, and special treats—part of the airport’s commitment to a world-class travel experience. Continuing a beloved Filipino tradition, Simbang Gabi will also be held at the Terminal 1 Airport Chapel from December 15 to 23, inviting the airport community to reflect on the true essence of Christmas.
