Habagat brings rains as Francisco moves away

Parts of Luzon and the Visayas are in for a rainy Wednesday as the southwest monsoon, or Habagat, continues to be enhanced by Typhoon Francisco.

Pagasa said rains affecting Metro Manila and nearby provinces were being caused mainly by the monsoon.

Scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and the Negros Island Region.

Pagasa warned that moderate to heavy rains may trigger flash floods and landslides in areas prone to these hazards.

As of Wednesday morning, Francisco was located 275 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 190 kilometers per hour.

The typhoon was moving north at 10 kilometers per hour, while Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remained raised over Batanes and the northeastern part of Cagayan, including the Babuyan Islands.

Pagasa said Francisco would likely remain a typhoon while inside the Philippine area of responsibility before weakening into a severe tropical storm after leaving PAR.

The weather bureau was also monitoring Tropical Storm Higos outside PAR. It was expected to enter the country’s monitoring area on Thursday and would be named Gardo, although Pagasa said it was forecast to stay far from land and was not expected to directly affect the country.
