Police in Northern Mindanao tightened security around schools following the deadly shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.

Police Regional Office 10 chief Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano said police deployment had already been put in place across the region.

He said additional police visibility would be implemented along common routes used by students going to and from school.

Abrahano said police personnel would also join Monday flag-raising ceremonies in schools to help ensure campus safety.

He also reminded police officers to strictly secure their service firearms and prevent access by civilians, including relatives.

PRO-10 spokesperson Maj. Joane Navarro said administrative cases would be filed against personnel who fail to follow firearm safekeeping rules.

Initial findings in the Tacloban school shooting showed that one of the minor suspects used a Glock pistol reportedly taken from a relative in the police service.

The regional education office also urged the public to cooperate with the security measures as authorities moved to prevent similar incidents.
