MANILA – Thirty public schools are set to receive up to P12 million in learning support from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), including solar power systems for schools with unreliable electricity.
GSIS said the expanded assistance under its Adopt-A-School Program coincides with National Teachers’ Day, observed every October 5.
Each beneficiary school may receive up to P400,000 worth of support, including technology and assistive learning devices, furniture, equipment and other resources for both online and face-to-face classes.
GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso said the inclusion of solar power systems aims to help teachers and students in underserved communities where electricity supply remains unstable.
“Through the Adopt-A-School Program, we are giving them the equipment and the steady power they need to teach well, and giving their students a fair chance to learn,” Veloso said.
The solar units are intended to keep computers and other learning technologies operational in schools with inadequate or unreliable power supply.
GSIS said the beneficiary schools will be identified in coordination with the Department of Education, which will recommend last-mile and other priority schools needing technology and learning assistance.
GSIS branch offices will then work with the selected schools to determine their specific needs and facilitate the delivery of support.
The initiative builds on an existing GSIS-DepEd partnership for underserved schools. In 2025, the two agencies agreed to equip 30 last-mile schools with essential technology and learning resources.
Under GSIS Board Resolution No. 133 issued in September 2023, the Adopt-A-School Program will run from 2024 to 2027 and aims to assist 30 schools annually, or 120 schools over four years.
The program has an approved allocation of P48 million, equivalent to P12 million per year.
GSIS said the initiative forms part of its efforts to provide social value beyond its core mandate of insurance and retirement benefits for government workers.
National Teachers’ Month runs from September 5 to October 5, with this year’s celebration carrying the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman.”
