University of Santo Tomas bounced back strong from its recent heartbreak with a commanding sweep of NCAA champion Arellano University, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15, Wednesday night at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
Powered by Jan Julian Macam’s all-around brilliance, the Golden Spikers improved to 4-1, securing solo second place behind unbeaten De La Salle (5-0). Macam erupted for 14 points—all from attacks—while also anchoring UST’s defense with five excellent receptions and four digs.
He had plenty of help, too. Gboy de Vega added 12 points, Trevor Valera chipped in nine, and both John Vryvin Catinsag and Sherwin Jan Umandal contributed six apiece. The balanced attack underscored UST’s resurgence following a five-set marathon loss to UAAP champion National University last August 19.
Assistant coach Benjamin Mape praised the team’s response: “The first thing we really focused on was the kids’ mental toughness. After the NU loss, we worked on that along with their skills. It showed tonight, but we need to prepare even harder for FEU this Saturday.”
UST battles Far Eastern University (3-1) on September 6 in a pivotal clash for positioning in the standings.
On the other side, Arellano skipper Jiwen Sinuto fought hard with 10 points, while Arman Clarence Guinto contributed five markers and 15 excellent receptions. The Chiefs briefly threatened in the second set, cutting the deficit to 15-13, but could not sustain the rally. They drop to 1-3 and will next face Ateneo on September 7.
Meanwhile, Colegio de San Juan de Letran turned back College of Saint Benilde, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23, to tie National University at 2-3 for fifth place.
Dave Lardizabal led the Knights’ charge with 21 points, backed by Bembem Bautista’s 18. On the other side, reigning NCAA MVP Rocky Motol carried the Blazers with 18 points and 17 receptions, while Reymark Betco added 12. Benilde, now at 1-4, faces FEU on September 7, while Letran takes on the Tamaraws on September 10.
