As Southern Mindanao reels from the impact of a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake, Globe has intensified emergency response operations to help restore communication services and support affected communities across the region.
The strong offshore tremor near Sarangani on June 8 triggered tsunami warnings in several coastal areas, prompting evacuations and emergency measures as residents were advised to seek safer ground and stay alert for potential sea surges and aftershocks.
With communication playing a critical role during disasters, Globe immediately activated its business continuity and disaster response teams to assess network conditions and coordinate recovery efforts on the ground.
Connectivity Challenges Across Southern Mindanao
The earthquake disrupted telecommunications services in multiple areas, with network interruptions reported in about 30 municipalities across nine provinces.
The most significant impact was recorded in Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, where damage to power infrastructure and safety-related shutdowns affected the operation of several cell sites.
To keep essential services running, Globe has switched affected facilities to backup power systems while awaiting the restoration of commercial electricity.
Technical teams have also been dispatched to inspect network assets and determine the extent of damage, allowing restoration work to proceed as soon as conditions are deemed safe.
“Reliable communication is crucial during emergencies. Our teams are on the ground working to assess affected sites and restore connectivity wherever possible,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.
She added that Globe remains in close coordination with local authorities and utility providers to ensure that restoration efforts are carried out safely and efficiently.
Emergency Support Services on Standby
Recognizing the need for uninterrupted communication during crises, Globe is preparing to activate its emergency assistance stations that provide free calls, device charging, and Wi-Fi access.
These services, known as Libreng Tawag, Libreng Charging, at Libreng Wi-Fi, will be deployed in strategic locations once authorities declare affected areas safe for access and operations.
The company said announcements regarding activation sites will be released through its official social media and communication channels.
Supporting Communities During Recovery
Beyond restoring network services, Globe is closely monitoring developments in affected communities and coordinating with disaster response partners to determine where additional support may be needed.
The company encouraged residents to stay informed through official government advisories, avoid coastal danger zones until authorities declare them safe, and remain cautious as aftershocks may continue in the coming days.
As recovery efforts continue, Globe reaffirmed its commitment to keeping communities connected and ensuring that critical communication lines remain available when they are needed most.
