Globe builds behind-the-scenes tech backbone for PH’s AI, cloud boom

The next big battle in the digital economy may not be about faster mobile speeds or wider network coverage. It could be about what happens behind the screen.

As artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital banking, streaming and online gaming become more deeply embedded in everyday life, Globe is stepping up investments in data centers — the largely unseen facilities that keep the country’s growing digital activity running.

Through its strategic investment in ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Philippines, Globe is expanding its role beyond connectivity and into the infrastructure needed to store, process and move massive amounts of data.

From a simple mobile payment to a corporate cloud platform or an AI-powered application, nearly every digital interaction depends on servers and computing systems housed inside data centers.

That makes these facilities increasingly comparable to roads, airports and power plants: infrastructure that may not always be visible to consumers, but is essential to keeping a modern economy moving.

The Philippine market is already showing signs of rapid expansion. Research and Markets valued the local data center industry at roughly US$633 million in 2024 and expects it to reach US$1.97 billion by 2030, translating to annual growth of more than 20 percent.

The surge is being driven by the country’s massive online population of around 97.5 million internet users, along with the increasing use of cloud services, digital platforms, streaming, gaming and AI.

For Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz, the challenge is no longer just about building more digital capacity, but making sure that new infrastructure can support long-term growth.

“Digital infrastructure works hand in hand with today’s advanced technologies,” Cruz said. “It enables businesses to operate, governments to deliver services, and people to stay connected.”

He added that rapid expansion must also come with a stronger focus on resilience and responsible operations.

“As demand continues to grow, it’s equally important that we build this infrastructure responsibly so it creates lasting value for businesses, communities, and the country,” Cruz said.

AI puts more pressure on infrastructure
The rise of generative AI and other data-heavy technologies is raising the stakes for data center operators.

AI platforms often require significantly more computing power than conventional digital services, placing heavier demands on electricity, cooling systems and network capacity.

Businesses adopting AI for analytics, automation, customer service and productivity tools will increasingly need infrastructure that can handle large workloads without interruptions.
