The PBA Commissioner’s Cup takes an exciting detour to Batangas City as Barangay Ginebra and Converge collide in a pivotal Saturday showdown at the Batangas City Coliseum. This road game sets the stage for both teams to bolster their positions within the Top Eight and gain crucial momentum ahead of their highly anticipated Christmas Day matchups.
Ginebra faces the Magnolia Hotshots, while Converge takes on the Meralco Bolts in an explosive December 25 double-header at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. But first, their 7:30 p.m. clash in Batangas will determine who gains the upper hand in the race for playoff seeding.
Coach Tim Cone’s Gin Kings aim to notch their fourth win in five games, while Coach Franco Atienza’s FiberXers are gunning for a third straight victory and a fifth overall to improve their current 4-2 record. Both teams target a coveted Top Two spot, with the critical twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Ginebra is coming off a strong rebound performance, overcoming the absence of key players Japeth Aguilar (groin injury) and Stephen Holt (knee injury). The team leaned heavily on import Justin Brownlee, who delivered a spectacular 49-point performance, including six three-pointers, to crush the Terrafirma Dyip, 114-98, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Wednesday.
“It was a good win for us because we were missing two starters—two very important contributors,” said Cone. “There was some anxiety heading into the game, wondering if we could match up, but our guys stepped up.”
Brownlee’s heroics were supported by RJ Abarrientos’ 18-point outing, highlighted by sharp shooting from beyond the arc, and Troy Rosario’s solid 17-point, five-rebound effort. Ginebra dominated the Dyip, leading by as many as 22 points.
FiberXers find their groove
Meanwhile, Converge has hit its stride after a rocky start to the conference, stringing together back-to-back wins for the first time. The FiberXers overpowered the NLEX Road Warriors, 102-91, on Tuesday before rallying from an 18-point deficit to defeat the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, 116-105, on Thursday.
Against Phoenix, Converge turned the tide with a 33-24 second-quarter run, followed by a dominant 39-26 third quarter. They sustained momentum into the final frame, outscoring their opponents 29-25 to seal the comeback victory.
Jordan Heading led the charge with a stellar all-around game, scoring 21 points while adding six assists and five steals. Cheick Diallo matched Heading’s scoring output and grabbed 16 rebounds, anchoring the team on both ends of the floor. Supporting efforts from Schonny Winston (16 points), Bryan Santos (16), Alec Stockton (14), BJ Andrade (11), and Justine Baltazar (13 rebounds) underscored Converge’s depth and teamwork.
Road game with playoff implications
This matchup in Batangas carries significant playoff implications for both squads. For Ginebra, a win would solidify their Top Four standing and keep them in striking distance of the twice-to-beat incentive. For Converge, another victory would extend their winning streak and strengthen their bid for a top-tier seed.
With both teams showing strong form and their star players delivering standout performances, fans can expect an intense battle in Batangas City. The outcome could set the tone for the rest of their campaigns as they prepare for marquee Christmas Day showdowns against their rivals.
The Gin Kings and the FiberXers are not just playing for position—they’re battling for momentum, confidence, and a potential edge on the road to the playoffs. Basketball fans are in for a thrilling contest as the PBA Commissioner’s Cup heats up in its final stretch.
