‘Gigil’ and 10 more Filipino words added to Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially added gigil to its Philippine English category this March.

Along with gigil, 10 other Filipino words made it to the list:

CR – A toilet or lavatory.

Kababayan – A fellow Filipino or a small, sweet cake shaped like a salakot.

Lumpia – A type of spring roll filled with meat, seafood, or vegetables.

Pinoy – Relating to the Philippines or Filipinos.

Salakot – A traditional Filipino hat worn by farmers.

Sando – A sleeveless undershirt or vest.

Thomasite – An American teacher who helped establish the Philippine public school system during U.S. occupation.

Videoke – A form of karaoke popular in the Philippines.

Load – Mobile phone credit for pay-as-you-go users.

Terror – A strict, harsh, or demanding teacher.

Other Filipino words already in the OED include kilig, barkada, and bakya, reflecting the growing global recognition of Philippine culture and language.
