GCash, the Globe-backed fintech super app, has launched a Virtual US Account that allows Filipino freelancers to get paid in US dollars straight into their e-wallet — no need for a U.S. bank account or extra hidden fees. The new feature cuts down on platform charges and forex costs, helping gig workers boost their take-home pay and access their earnings faster.
Once fully verified, users can receive instant transfers from U.S.-based platforms directly into GCash, and convert their USD to Philippine pesos only when they choose, thanks to competitive exchange rates within the app.
GCash says the move could also strengthen dollar inflows into the Philippines, as the U.S. remains a major source of remittances — around 40% of cash remittances from January to August came from there, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
The Virtual US Accounts themselves are provided via Meridian Payments US under a “for benefit of” setup — they’re not traditional bank accounts and don’t qualify for deposit insurance.
