Quezon City has taken another step toward modernizing public service delivery as the local government begins releasing scholarship grants to its youth scholars through GCash, making financial assistance faster, safer, and easier to access for students across the city.

Through the Quezon City Youth Development Office, scholarship funds are now disbursed directly to scholars’ GCash wallets, eliminating long queues, paperwork, and delays associated with manual or in-person payouts. The shift allows students to receive their grants almost instantly and use them with greater flexibility for their day-to-day academic needs.

Under the cashless setup, scholars can pay for tuition and other school-related expenses straight from their digital wallets. Those issued with GCash Visa Cards can also use their grants both online and at physical stores that accept card payments, expanding where and how the assistance can be spent.

City officials said the system gives students more control over essential expenses such as books, school supplies, transportation, and meals, while reducing the risks that come with carrying cash—an important consideration for students juggling full academic schedules.

Mayor Joy Belmonte said the initiative reflects the city’s push to make public services more practical and youth-friendly, especially in a highly digital environment like Quezon City.

“Ngayon, sa pamamagitan ng pagdisburse natin ng scholarship via GCash, mas madali at convenient na para sa ating scholars ang kanilang pagbabayad sa tuition at iba pang pangangailangan sa pag-aaral tulad ng books, supplies at maging pang-araw-araw ng pagkain. Sa malawak na acceptance at paggamit ng GCash, lalo na dito sa Quezon City, maaari na mag full cashless ang ating mga kabataan,” Belmonte said.

Beyond convenience, the program is paired with financial literacy sessions aimed at helping scholars develop responsible and secure digital finance habits as they move toward greater independence. City officials noted that early exposure to managing funds digitally prepares students for real-world financial responsibilities.

The move to cashless scholarship payouts is also seen as a boost to transparency and efficiency, ensuring that education assistance reaches its intended beneficiaries on time and with minimal administrative friction. With fewer logistical hurdles, scholars are able to focus more on their studies and long-term goals.

By integrating scholarship disbursement with digital tools, GCash and the Quezon City government are helping young scholars access their grants more conveniently and securely, while introducing them to modern financial systems that support both their education and their future.
