Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has emerged as a possible contender for Senate leadership as shifting alliances among lawmakers signal the formation of a new majority bloc.
Former Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson and Senator Francis Pangilinan separately said Gatchalian could serve as a unifying figure in the chamber.
They noted support from a so-called Solid Bloc 11, along with other senators who may align with the group in the event of another leadership change.
The discussions followed recent political turbulence in the Senate, including a leadership transition earlier this month.
Pangilinan described Gatchalian as “competent, steady and fair,” citing his experience in handling major legislative measures, including the national budget.
He also said Gatchalian’s leadership style could help restore balance and accountability in the upper chamber.
Lacson echoed this view, saying Gatchalian had the experience and preparedness to preside over the Senate and help form a more unified institution.
Gatchalian himself said he was ready to assume the Senate presidency if chosen, stressing the importance of fairness, institutional stability, and continued legislative work despite political shifts.
