MANILA – Energy Secretary Sharon Garin on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating the country’s transition to renewable energy (RE) to strengthen energy security and reduce the economy’s exposure to external risks.
Speaking at the Philippine Energy Investment Forum at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Garin said the government has introduced policies aimed at expanding the country’s renewable and alternative energy options while attracting investments in emerging technologies.
She said these measures are paving the way for further exploration of geothermal and nuclear energy while encouraging investments in solar, onshore and offshore wind, and integrated energy and storage systems.
Garin said diversifying the country’s energy sources would help reduce dependence on imported fuels and protect consumers and the economy from disruptions and volatility in global energy markets.
The Department of Energy is targeting to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s power generation mix to around 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
The government intends to raise the share further beyond 2040 as it continues to pursue cleaner and more secure energy sources.
Garin stressed that attracting investments and deploying new energy technologies will be crucial to meeting the country’s growing power requirements while ensuring a reliable and resilient energy system.
