Gabriela’s ‘Black Friday protest’ over alleged loss of women’s voice after 2025 elections

Gabriela Women’s Party has voiced serious concerns about the apparent erosion of authentic representation for women in Congress following the 2025 elections.

According to the official results released by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) on May 12, 2025, Gabriela ranked 55th in the party-list race. The group has since questioned the outcome, citing the mysterious disappearance of approximately 50,000 votes believed to have been cast in their favor. In response, Gabriela is demanding an independent and manual recount to ensure the integrity of the results.

The group also criticized the rise of several so-called “fake party-lists,” such as Duterte Youth, which placed second in the rankings. Gabriela argued that these groups fail to genuinely represent the marginalized sectors they claim to advocate for and accused them of exploiting the party-list system for political and personal gain.

Progressive organizations including Anakpawis, Kabataan Party-list, and other nationalist groups joined Gabriela in protest. Demonstrators carried placards calling for transparent elections, accurate vote counts, and the restoration of women’s true voice in the legislature.

Gabriela reaffirmed its commitment to fighting for a free, just, and truly representative electoral process. The group vowed to continue its advocacy through both legal avenues and grassroots mobilization until women regain rightful representation in Congress.
