The Philippines will face Group A leaders Argentina on Thursday night, hoping to finish their inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup campaign on a positive note at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
Though already eliminated from quarterfinal contention following losses to Poland (0-6) and Morocco (2-3), the Filipina5 are determined to give fans a memorable performance in their 8:30 p.m. clash with the unbeaten La Albiceleste.
“It’s the World Cup, and we’re playing at home—that alone motivates the players,” Philippine coach Rafa Merino said in Spanish.
The Filipina5 nearly made history against Morocco, taking an early lead with goals from Inday Tolentin and Cathrine Graversen before the reigning African champions came back with three goals. That result left Morocco and Poland tied for second place with three points each, setting up a winner-takes-all match for the final quarterfinal spot at 6 p.m.
World No. 6 Argentina secured top spot in the group with wins over Morocco (6-0) and Poland (3-2), and now face the hosts in their final group game.
Ranked 63rd in the world, the Filipina5 are clear underdogs, but Merino insists they will give it their all. “We have to give our best, stay true to our style, and play the way we know how,” he said. “We may not do anything extraordinary, but we will play our best.”
