From overlooked laundry to $4.2M icon: The forgotten Michael Jordan’s first Bulls jersey

When a young Michael Jordan stepped onto the court for his first NBA preseason game in Peoria, Illinois, on October 5, 1984, the crowd of 2,000 had no idea they were witnessing the start of something historic. Clad in a plain red Chicago Bulls jersey—one that didn’t even have his name properly stitched—Jordan was simply a rookie with potential.

Fast-forward four decades, and that unremarkable uniform has transformed into a relic of sports history. On Wednesday, the very jersey Jordan wore in that quiet preseason debut was auctioned by Sotheby’s for a staggering $4.2 million.

While it fell short of the $10 million estimate and the $10.1 million record set in 2022 for a Finals-worn Jordan jersey, it still ranks among the top three most valuable Jordan jerseys ever sold.

A missed opportunity worth millions
What makes this story even more remarkable is how close someone came to owning it for a mere $1,000. After being donated to a Washington Bullets charity auction in the mid-80s, the jersey initially went to the highest bidder, who failed to follow through on payment.

That left the door open for the underbidder, who secured it for just $800.

That same jersey, once considered little more than a used uniform, would become one of basketball’s most prized collectibles.

More than meets the eye
At the time of Jordan’s debut, memorabilia held little sentimental or monetary value. Players and teams treated game-worn gear like used towels. “It was a piece of laundry,” said Brahm Wachter, senior vice president and head of modern collectibles at Sotheby’s. Teams often recycled jerseys, and this one was no exception.

Faint letters visible on the back hint that the jersey once belonged to another player—possibly Mitchell Wiggins, who wore Bulls red the previous season.

Jordan wore the jersey not just for his first preseason appearance, where he scored 18 points, but also for his next two preseason games. Then, like many rookie jerseys of the era, it disappeared from public consciousness—until years later, when technology helped resurrect its legacy.

Confirmed through forensic magic
Authenticating the jersey wasn’t easy. There are no known still photographs from that 1984 game, only grainy video footage.

MeiGray, a leading authenticator, conducted a forensic video analysis, comparing details like the spacing of the numerals on the back to confirm its authenticity.

The result: it’s the only photo-matched jersey from Jordan’s rookie year known to exist.

A long road to the spotlight
After the underbidder acquired the jersey for $800, it lay relatively dormant until resurfacing in 2009, when it sold for $66,000 through Grey Flannel Auctions.

At the time, former Bulls PR chief Tim Hallam speculated it might be the very first jersey issued to Jordan by the franchise—a detail that adds even more allure to the garment.

Now, with its recent $4.2 million price tag, the jersey has cemented its place not just in basketball lore, but in the annals of sports memorabilia as a symbol of how even the humblest beginnings can become legendary.
