Fresh bills, festive giving: BSP readies banks for Christmas aguinaldo season

As the Christmas season approaches, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is once again helping keep a cherished Filipino tradition alive: the joy of giving aguinaldo to godchildren, relatives, and loved ones—and the unmistakable thrill of receiving crisp, newly minted banknotes.

The BSP reminded the public that exchanging unfit or worn banknotes through banks is free of charge. Filipinos are encouraged to transact only with BSP-authorized banks when changing their money, and to avoid dealing with individuals or unauthorized parties that may impose unnecessary “service fees,” especially during the holiday rush.

In anticipation of the annual surge in cash demand, the BSP has ramped up the production of fresh banknotes and coins, ensuring that banks nationwide are well stocked ahead of Christmas.

For many families, neatly folded new bills tucked into red envelopes remain an essential part of the season—symbols of blessing, generosity, and shared celebration that light up children’s faces every December.

At the same time, the BSP is gently nudging the public toward modern alternatives by encouraging the use of digital or e-aguinaldo.

Sending cash gifts through e-wallets and online banking platforms offers a safe, convenient, and increasingly popular option, especially for Filipinos separated by distance but united by tradition.

Whether handed over in crisp bills after Simbang Gabi or sent instantly through a smartphone, the spirit remains the same: giving from the heart, and sharing in the simple joy that defines a Filipino Christmas.
