Mental health conversations in the Philippines have become more open and widely accepted, but for many patients, the cost of treatment remains a heavy burden. Prescription medicines for conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia can cost thousands of pesos every month, often forcing individuals and families to choose between staying on medication and covering daily expenses.

What many people are unaware of is that free mental health medications are already available through a government-supported initiative.

For residents of Metro Manila, the Medicine Access Program for Mental Health, implemented by the Department of Health – Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD), provides essential psychiatric medicines at no cost. The program was designed to make mental health care more accessible and to help patients maintain consistent treatment without the added pressure of financial strain.

As of December 2025, the program covers a range of commonly prescribed medications. These include antipsychotics such as clozapine, risperidone, quetiapine, and paliperidone palmitate, as well as antidepressants like escitalopram and mood stabilizers including valproic acid and lithium carbonate. Supplies may vary depending on availability, but all medicines offered under the program are distributed free of charge.

The process to avail of the medication is simple. Patients must secure a valid and updated prescription from a licensed psychiatrist, then email a copy of the prescription to mentalhealth.dohncr@gmail.com or mapmhmmchd@gmail.com. After verification, applicants will receive confirmation and guidance on where to claim their medication.

Free medicines can be picked up at any of the Department of Health’s designated Mental Health Access Sites, with more than 40 locations operating across Metro Manila. Beyond medication, the program also provides free consultations, basic medical services, referrals, and other mental health support initiatives.

For anyone struggling to afford mental health treatment, this program offers real help and real hope. Sharing this information may not seem like much, but for someone in need, it could mean continued care, stability, and a chance to heal.
