Frasco urges unifying leadership in the House, withholds support for Romualdez speakership

Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco has publicly declined to endorse the continued speakership of Martin Romualdez, advocating instead for a more inclusive and unifying leadership within the House of Representatives. Frasco emphasizes that such leadership is essential for effectively tackling the pressing challenges facing the Filipino people.

Frasco, who represents Cebu’s 5th District, stated that the growing political divisions within the House necessitate a focus on unity and shared objectives. “After careful consideration, I have chosen not to sign the manifesto supporting the speakership,” he declared. “This is a critical moment for our nation, and I believe we need leadership that brings us together rather than deepens divisions. We need a vision that serves the collective interests of our country.”

In expressing his dissatisfaction with the current congressional leadership, Frasco pointed to the detrimental impact of “political and personal interests on the unity that our people desperately seek.” He revealed that he was solicited to sign the manifesto on May 14, just two days following the 2025 local elections. However, after discussions with fellow legislators, local leaders from the Visayas and Mindanao, as well as his constituents, he opted against it.

“A shared sense of frustration has emerged, with deep disappointment regarding the erosion of unity that many had hoped for,” Frasco remarked. He clarified that his decision was not intended to create division but to champion the need for stronger, more effective leadership in the House. He aligned this call with President Marcos’ emphasis on stability and meaningful change.

“I firmly believe the House must improve. We should act as partners in nation-building, not as a breeding ground for discord,” he asserted.

Frasco noted that his stance reflects the President’s aspiration for unity and results, particularly after the midterm election outcomes. The President has openly acknowledged the public’s discontent with the government’s performance, evident in the limited success of administration-aligned senatorial candidates in the elections.

Highlighting the President’s commitment to cooperation, Frasco urged all winners from the 2025 midterm elections—regardless of their party affiliations—to work together. “The President has consistently called for unity and a government that delivers impactful change. I believe that the House of Representatives should embody these principles, not only through our legislative actions but also in the leadership we choose to support,” he stated.

Emphasizing the essence of public service, Frasco insisted that it must remain centered on the needs of the people, free from the influences of personal or political agendas.
