Japan recorded its highest number of foreign residents to date at the end of 2025, surpassing the four million mark for the first time, according to government data released Friday.

The Immigration Services Agency said the total reached 4,125,395, reflecting a notable increase compared with the previous year.

In contrast, the number of individuals staying in the country beyond their permitted period declined, with authorities reporting a second consecutive annual drop.

As of Jan. 1, the tally of overstaying residents fell to 68,488, lower than figures recorded a year earlier.

The agency also reported a surge in arrivals, with more than 42 million foreigners entering Japan in 2025, setting another record and exceeding the 40 million threshold.

By nationality, people from China comprised the largest group of residents, followed by those from Vietnam and South Korea.

In terms of residency categories, permanent residents accounted for the biggest share, with large numbers also recorded among professionals in technical and service-related fields.

Foreign students also made up a significant portion of the population, reflecting continued demand for education and training opportunities in Japan.
