Filipino athletes showed that excellence knows no climate limits as the Philippines celebrated its ice skating and ice hockey standouts following a historic campaign in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
The recognition came during The Day of Champions, an event organized by the Philippine Skating Union at the SM Mall of Asia Skating Rink, bringing together athletes, officials, and supporters who witnessed a breakthrough moment for winter sports in a tropical nation.
Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio joined the celebration, honoring the skaters and ice hockey players who delivered an impressive eight-medal haul for the country.

The Filipino contingent returned home with one gold, three silver, and four bronze medals, a performance that turned heads across the region and reinforced the Philippines’ growing presence in non-traditional sports.
Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Gregorio emphasized that the athletes’ success is proof of the country’s vast and often untapped sporting potential. He stressed that sustained investment in world-class facilities is crucial to expanding the national talent pool, especially in disciplines that require specialized infrastructure such as ice sports.
According to him, the SEA Games results should serve as both inspiration and a call to action for long-term sports development.
The achievements of the skating and ice hockey teams stood out not only for the medal count, but for what they represent.
Competing against nations with established cold-weather programs, Filipino athletes displayed discipline, adaptability, and resilience, qualities that allowed them to thrive despite limited access to ice facilities at home.
As the cheers echoed inside the Mall of Asia rink, the Day of Champions became more than a simple recognition ceremony.
It marked a statement of belief that Filipino athletes can succeed anywhere, even on ice, and that with the right support, the country’s next generation of champions may emerge from places once thought impossible for sporting greatness.
