The Philippines women’s national football team, the Filipinas, secured a 2-0 victory over Iran on Sunday in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia.

Sara Eggesvik opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a goal that was initially contested but ultimately allowed after review, giving the Filipinas a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Chandler McDaniel added a second goal in the 82nd minute to seal the win, despite another goal being disallowed late in the match following a review.

With the result, the Philippines finished third in Group A with a 1-0-2 record, behind South Korea and host Australia.

The Filipinas must now wait for the outcomes of other groups to determine their ranking among third-place finishers, as only the two best third-placed teams from the three groups advance to the knockout stage.

In Group B, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan will play on Monday to decide the third-placed team.

In Group C, Vietnam holds a 1-0-1 record and a superior goal difference over India ahead of its match against Japan on Tuesday.

The victory keeps the Philippines’ hopes alive for advancing to the knockout rounds of the continental tournament.
