The bright lights of New York witnessed a breakthrough moment for Philippine tennis as Alex Eala pulled off the biggest win of her young career, rallying past World No. 14 Clara Tauson, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11), in a dramatic first-round showdown at the US Open.
The 20-year-old from Quezon City not only advanced to the round of 64 but also carved her name into history as the first Filipino to win a senior Grand Slam singles match in the Open era.
It was a night of grit, heart, and an unrelenting refusal to fold.
Eala took the opening set with crisp baseline play, but the Danish powerhouse struck back, dominating the second set with booming serves that left the Filipina scrambling. By the decider, Tauson had built what looked like an insurmountable 5-1 lead, her power and confidence smothering Eala’s rhythm.
But then the match flipped.

With chants of “Let’s go Alex!” echoing through the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Eala began clawing her way back one point at a time. Her defensive grit forced errors, her returns grew sharper, and soon the pressure shifted. From the brink of elimination, she stormed back to level at 5-all, stunning Tauson and electrifying the crowd.
The tension peaked in the marathon tiebreak. Tauson’s 12 aces kept her in the fight, but Eala’s 49 points won on return—an astonishing number against such a big server—told the story of her resilience. After trading blows past double digits, it was Tauson who blinked, sending the final ball wide.
Eala dropped to the court in disbelief, her arms outstretched as the stadium roared.
“Oh my God, it was so difficult,” Eala admitted afterward. “She’s a huge player, a great player. I just kept telling myself to push the limit, physically and mentally. This was it.”
The victory assures Eala at least $154,000 (around P8.7 million) from the tournament, which boasts a record $90 million purse this year. More importantly, it cements her arrival on tennis’ biggest stage—not as a promising junior, not as a wild card, but as a legitimate Grand Slam threat.
Next, Eala will face either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or American Claire Liu in the second round.
For now, though, one thing is clear: Philippine tennis has never seen a night like this, and Alex Eala is just getting started.
