MAYPAJO, Caloocan City — Decades back, when I was still with the Journal Group of Publications (or Philippine Journalists Incorporated, PJI), I luckily met then Brazilian volleyball star Leila Barros at the Manila Pavilion in Ermita, Manila.
Leila was guest in the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum and after the session we had photo opportunities with her. Unfortunately, back then photos were done in film and printed on paper, so I wasn’t able to save our photo.
I’m recalling this moment now as the beauteous Brazilian netter-turned-senator is set to return to the Philippines to serve as guest-of-honor for this year’s Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Men’s World Championship.
The Finals round of the tournament— semifinal and final matches—is set on September 27 and 28 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, as announced by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF).
“Mark your calendars: the Semifinal and Final matches happen on September 27–28, 2025 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena,” Volleyball Philippines posted.
“We can’t wait to welcome Leila Barros back to the Philippines and celebrate this unforgettable moment with all of you!” PNVF and Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) president Ramon Suzara enthused—something we definitely feel, too.
Suzara invited Barros, keying the return of the crowd darling during the 2000 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
At 5-foot-10 and an athletic and wily opposite hitter, Barros’ outstanding play and charisma had drawn Filipino fans to her. The then 29-year-old’s presence at that time helped develop the popularity of volleyball in the country.
Now 53 years old, Barros retired in 2008 and eventually ran and won as a Brazilian senator in 2019 with her term ending in 2027.
