Dwight Ramos set for Gilas Pilipinas return in 2025 FIBA Asia Cup and World Cup Qualifiers

Filipino-American basketball standout Dwight Ramos will once again represent Gilas Pilipinas in major international competitions this year.

Ramos is expected to suit up for the Philippines in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup this August in Saudi Arabia and the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers beginning in November.

In the Asia Cup group stage, Gilas will face tough opponents including New Zealand, Taipei, and Iraq. The World Cup Qualifiers will pit the team against New Zealand, Australia, and Guam.

Ramos, who has played with Gilas every year since 2020, shared his experience with frequent matchups against New Zealand’s Tall Blacks. His Gilas career record against New Zealand stands at 1 win and 3 losses. His first encounter was in February 2022, where he posted a notable 18-point, 10-rebound game despite a loss.

The breakthrough win over New Zealand came in November 2024 during the Asia Cup Qualifiers, with Ramos contributing 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Acknowledging the challenge of facing the world’s No. 22 ranked Tall Blacks, Ramos remains focused and committed to giving his best. He also noted the absence of key teammate Kai Sotto, who is sidelined recovering from an ACL injury.

For Ramos and Gilas, the goal in the World Cup Qualifiers is clear: secure a spot in the 2027 World Cup. Ramos emphasized focusing on winning winnable games rather than aiming to win every match outright.

Before joining the Gilas squad for the Asia Cup, Ramos will return to the United States for personal training to prepare for the intense competition.
