Durant’s calm carries Rockets past Hornets

Kevin Durant turned a tense finish into a masterclass in late-game control, lifting the Houston Rockets to a gritty 105–101 road win over the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night at Spectrum Center.

Playing their first game after the All-Star break, the Rockets leaned on Durant’s precision and composure when execution mattered most. The veteran forward scored 35 points on an ultra-efficient 14-of-20 shooting, punctuating his night with a series of cold-blooded jumpers and free throws that silenced a late Hornets push.

Houston survived a subpar night from beyond the arc, hitting just nine of 32 three-point attempts, by forcing 16 Charlotte turnovers and consistently getting quality looks inside. Jabari Smith Jr. supplied 15 points, while Alperen Şengün and rookie Reed Sheppard chipped in 13 apiece as the Rockets extended their road surge to five straight wins away from home.

Charlotte, which had been riding one of its hottest stretches of the season with 10 wins in its previous 11 games, couldn’t sustain its momentum through the final period. Grant Williams led the Hornets with 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Brandon Miller finished with 17 points despite struggling mightily from long range, missing 11 of 12 three-point attempts. Rookie Kon Knueppel added 15 points, though his night was marred by five turnovers.

The Hornets carried a 74–69 edge midway through the third quarter, but their offense bogged down as Houston tightened the screws defensively. The Rockets closed the period on a run to grab an 80–78 lead entering the fourth, setting the stage for Durant’s late takeover.

Charlotte cut the deficit to 97–93 with under three minutes remaining, only for Durant to answer with back-to-back baskets. Knueppel and Williams briefly reignited hope with timely shots in the final minute, trimming the margin to two, but Durant’s jumper and a pair of free throws in the closing seconds sealed the outcome.

LaMelo Ball, playing just a day after being involved in an automobile accident, logged 31 minutes and finished with 11 points, though he connected on only one of six attempts from deep. Charlotte was also shorthanded, missing Moussa Diabate and Miles Bridges due to suspensions stemming from a brawl last week against the Detroit Pistons.

For Houston, the win underscored a familiar formula: disciplined defense, opportunistic offense, and a superstar capable of deciding games when margins are thin. For Charlotte, it was a reminder that even during a strong run, closing time in the NBA leaves little room for error.
