LEGAZPI CITY — The Department of Social Welfare and Development extended financial assistance to thousands of farmers in Albay whose livelihoods were disrupted by the continued unrest of Mayon Volcano.
A total of 2,378 beneficiaries received support through the agency’s cash-for-work program, which provided temporary jobs to affected residents.
Each participant was given Php 13,050 after completing 30 days of assigned community tasks, according to regional disaster response officials.
The payout, which exceeded Php 31 million, was distributed across nine local government units, including Sto. Domingo, Bacacay, Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Legazpi City, Ligao City, Malilipot, and Tabaco City.
Authorities said the initiative targeted farmers and livestock raisers unable to tend to their land due to restrictions within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone.
Program implementers noted that many beneficiaries remained displaced as volcanic risks continued, preventing a return to normal farming activities.
Several recipients said the assistance helped cover daily needs, education expenses, and farm rehabilitation, while others used the funds to buy supplies and support livestock care.
The agency said it would continue working with local governments to sustain aid efforts as Mayon Volcano remains under close monitoring and safety restrictions stay in effect.
