The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Saturday that reconstruction of the collapsed section of the flood control structure in Barangay Kang-actol, Dumanjug, Cebu is now in full swing and will be completed within the week.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the rapid rebuilding effort follows the direct instruction of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who ordered the agency to fast-track repairs and ensure the safety of residents living near the affected area.
The reconstruction began on November 27—just two days after the structure gave way under the intense rains brought by Typhoon Verbena. Dizon said the swift timetable reflects the government’s urgency to restore protection for the community and reopen travel routes as soon as possible.
President Marcos also emphasized that no further disruptions to mobility should occur, underscoring the need to safeguard residents and motorists while works continue.
In a video update, Dumanjug Mayor Gungun Gica personally inspected the damaged site and asserted that the structure was not substandard, stressing that the collapse was caused by overwhelming natural forces rather than poor construction.
The full restoration is expected to be finished next week, providing immediate relief and renewed protection for Dumanjug residents still recovering from the storm.
