MANILA – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) are taking steps to secure additional funding and obtain replacement trainsets to sustain and improve operations of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2).
According to the DOTr, efforts are underway to identify funding sources and acquire new trainsets as the railway system continues to face challenges involving its existing fleet.
The agency said the procurement of additional trains could take three years or longer before new units are delivered, prompting officials to explore alternative measures to maintain efficient railway operations.
While awaiting the arrival of new trains, the DOTr is studying temporary solutions to improve services, particularly by reducing passenger queues and congestion at LRT-2 stations.
The department emphasized the importance of maintaining reliable public transportation services as commuters continue to depend on the railway system for their daily travel.
The DOTr and LRTA are expected to continue coordinating on funding requirements, train procurement and operational improvements to address the needs of LRT-2 passengers.
The agencies have yet to announce a specific timeline for the acquisition and deployment of additional trainsets.
