DOT-13 backs probe on skyrocketing airfares to Siargao

BUTUAN CITY — The Department of Tourism in the Caraga Region (DOT-13) has expressed support for the move of Surigao del Norte First District Rep. Francisco Matugas to investigate the soaring cost of airline tickets to Siargao Island.

“Tourism should remain affordable and inclusive, and not a privilege for only a few,” said DOT-13 Regional Director Ivonnie Dumadag in an interview on Thursday. She emphasized that since Siargao is a prime destination for both foreign and local travelers, the probe at the House of Representatives is “timely and appropriate.”

Dumadag added that Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco prioritizes sustaining tourism growth in island destinations, which includes ensuring the affordability, safety, and quality of travel experiences.

DOT-13 data shows that from January to August 19, 2025, 242,560 tourists visited Siargao — 167,401 domestic and 75,159 foreign visitors.

Concerns over airfare spiked after reports revealed that round-trip Manila-Siargao tickets can cost up to ₱30,000.

Rep. Matugas, who recently paid ₱22,000 for a Manila-Siargao-Manila ticket, confirmed that the schedule for the congressional investigation is being finalized.
