PASAY CITY, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness through its “Tsunami! Run for Safety” activity held at the North Fountain, SM by the Bay, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City on October 24, 2026.

The event formed part of the activities commemorating the 10th anniversary of World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD), an international observance aimed at strengthening public understanding of tsunami hazards and encouraging communities to adopt life-saving preparedness measures.

Through the initiative, DOST-PHIVOLCS sought to raise awareness of the dangers posed by tsunamis, particularly in coastal communities vulnerable to earthquake-generated waves.

The activity also emphasized the importance of recognizing tsunami warning signs, understanding evacuation procedures, and responding quickly during emergencies.

DOST-PHIVOLCS expressed its gratitude to the participants, partners, and supporters who contributed to the event’s success.

The agency reiterated that proper knowledge and preparedness are essential in reducing disaster risks and protecting lives.

The initiative supports the broader goal of building a tsunami-ready Philippines by encouraging individuals, families, and communities to take an active role in disaster risk reduction.

World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed annually on November 5 to promote international cooperation, disaster education, and preparedness against tsunami hazards.
