The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 8 is intensifying efforts to enhance the economic potential of coastal and marine biodiversity in Eastern Visayas, as part of its blue economy initiatives. Given the region’s dependence on marine resources for sustenance and economic growth, DOST is focusing on key sectors such as fisheries, marine transportation, aquaculture, island communities, and tourism.
According to DOST Assistant Regional Director Marilyn Radam, a proposal has been developed in collaboration with Central Visayas, Western Visayas, and the Negros Island Region to strengthen blue economy initiatives across the central Philippines. This proposal aims to optimize the sustainable use of marine resources while supporting local industries that rely on the ocean.
Among the notable DOST-supported projects are sea ranching initiatives in Southern Leyte, the maintenance of Samar’s safe water system, and efforts to preserve naturally thriving marine species, seaweeds, and fishery resources. Radam also highlighted concerns over the declining seaweed production in Leyte, particularly in Bato, which has long been a key area for seaweed farming. To address this, DOST, in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has deployed national scientists to assess the situation and provide necessary interventions.
In addition to seaweed production, DOST has identified other economically significant fishery species in the Visayan Sea and is working on applying technology to improve overall marine resource production. Last year, the department allocated PHP2 million for the development of a shipyard in Albuera, Leyte, which aims to convert ship waste into reusable materials. The project is expected to be operational by late 2025.
The Blue Economy Program is being carried out in collaboration with local government units, state universities, BFAR, and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development. These initiatives focus on sustainable maritime resource management, ensuring that economic growth in the region goes hand in hand with environmental conservation.
