CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — The Department of Health is strengthening disease prevention and response measures in CALABARZON following increases in water-borne, food-borne and influenza-like illnesses during the rainy season.
Dr. Eva Marie Torio of the DOH Center for Health Development in CALABARZON said wet conditions can increase the spread of diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue and influenza. She also called for stronger cholera prevention measures in affected communities, particularly in Cavite and Laguna, through safe drinking water, sanitation and proper hygiene.
DOH data showed that leptospirosis cases in the region rose 17 percent to 925 from 792 in 2025, with 55 deaths reported. Flood exposure accounted for 666 cases, or 72 percent of the total.
The region has also recorded 5,404 confirmed dengue cases and five cholera cases.
The DOH said its Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases program has begun planning workshops to strengthen preparedness for additional disease risks associated with changing weather conditions and the coming monsoon period.
