The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has extended support to the families of two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who died in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Mandalay, Myanmar on March 28.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac personally visited the bereaved families over the weekend, delivering condolences on behalf of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“Rest assured that, upon instructions of the President, we are taking care of the families by providing them all the assistance during their hour of utmost need,” Cacdac said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Yangon, is coordinating the repatriation of the two OFWs’ remains. The DMW also committed to offering post-arrival support and financial aid to the families once the bodies return to the Philippines.
Cacdac added that the DMW has reached out to other OFWs in Mandalay impacted by the earthquake and will provide financial assistance via its Aksyon Fund.
The two OFWs were among four initially reported missing following the collapse of the Sky Villa condominium, where some Filipinos were known to reside.
While the earthquake also caused damage in neighboring Thailand, no Filipinos were reported injured there.
As of Tuesday, Myanmar’s official death toll from the disaster has risen to 3,645, with more than 5,000 injured and 148 still missing.
