Deployment of medical teams at polling hubs urged amid extreme heat

With election day fast approaching, AGRI Party-list Representative Wilbert Lee on Tuesday called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Department of Health (DOH) to deploy enough medical personnel in polling precincts to address possible heat-related health emergencies.

Lee emphasized the need for on-site medical support as the country continues to experience extreme heat, with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reporting dangerously high heat index levels in several areas.

“The extreme heat we are currently experiencing is not just uncomfortable — it is dangerous, especially for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions who will go out and vote,” Lee said.

He underscored that while maintaining security and order during the elections is essential, the health and safety of voters must also be a top priority, especially in locations with large crowds and limited access to immediate healthcare.

According to the Comelec, over 68 million voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming midterm national and local elections.

“We understand that the Comelec already has contingency plans in place, but we urge them to include, or at the very least strengthen, provisions for on-site medical assistance in coordination with the DOH, local government units, and the Philippine Red Cross,” Lee added.

“Their presence could be the difference between life and death for some voters, especially those who are frail or medically compromised.”

The AGRI Party-list also reminded the public to take precautions on election day, urging voters to stay hydrated, wear light and breathable clothing, and bring umbrellas or hats for protection against the sun.
