MANILA – The Department of Education said Friday that the safety and well-being of learners, teachers and school personnel remain its top priority following a shooting incident at Banga National High School in South Cotabato.
South Cotabato Gov. Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. initially reported that at least five learners were affected by the incident, with the injured brought to Surallah Community Hospital and the provincial hospital.
The Philippine National Police said the shooting occurred at around 1:30 p.m. and that the suspect reportedly used a .45-caliber pistol.
Face-to-face classes at the school have been suspended until Sept. 21.
DepEd said it is coordinating with the Schools Division Office, regional officials, local authorities and law enforcement agencies to verify the circumstances of the incident and provide assistance to those affected.
The department also said psychological first aid and psychosocial support will be extended to learners, teachers and school personnel who may need help coping with the incident.
DepEd urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier this month, the agency launched nationwide school safety drills as part of efforts to strengthen preparedness for active threats and other emergencies.
DepEd said these measures are being complemented by tighter security protocols at school entry and exit points, increased police visibility and closer coordination with local authorities.
