Seven people were killed and 11 others were injured after two powerful earthquakes—measuring magnitude 7.4 and 6.8—shook Davao Oriental and nearby provinces on Friday, October 10, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Saturday.

In its latest situational update, the NDRRMC said all fatalities were recorded in the Davao Region, while one of the injured was from the Caraga Region.

The back-to-back tremors affected at least 3,519 families, or 8,436 individuals, across Davao Region and Caraga. Of these, 2,468 families (7,915 people) are currently seeking refuge in evacuation centers as aftershocks continue to rattle the area.

Preliminary assessments also showed that 28 houses sustained varying degrees of damage, while five were completely destroyed. Infrastructure damage was reported as well, with five road sections and one bridge in Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Caraga rendered impassable.

The first quake, a magnitude 7.4 offshore tremor, struck Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m., followed by a magnitude 6.8 quake at 7:12 p.m. The strong tremors triggered tsunami warnings that were later lifted after authorities confirmed no significant sea-level changes.

Disaster response teams have been deployed to assist affected residents, assess structural damages, and restore access to isolated areas. Authorities continue to urge vigilance as aftershocks remain likely in the coming days.
