A Danish political party called for Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses to be banned, raising concerns that wearers could discreetly record people without their consent.

The Red-Green Alliance argued that the technology posed privacy risks because its built-in camera could capture people who may not realize they were being filmed.

Eva Flyvholm, the party’s legal affairs spokesperson, said Monday that individuals should be protected from having their images or conversations recorded and potentially shared online without their knowledge.

She also called for Denmark’s laws to be reviewed as wearable devices become more capable of recording and processing information while attracting relatively little attention from people nearby.

The party highlighted the potential use of such devices in sensitive locations, including changing rooms and swimming pools, where covert recording could create particular privacy concerns.

The issue was brought to the Danish government, which indicated that authorities would examine how existing consumer and privacy protections could respond to emerging technologies.

Government officials said they planned to discuss the matter with the Danish Consumer Council. They also criticized the recording and publication of conversations or videos without the knowledge of those involved.

Meta’s smart glasses combine cameras, microphones and artificial intelligence features that allow users to capture media and access AI services. The proposal from the Red-Green Alliance remains a political call for prohibition, and Denmark has not imposed a nationwide ban on the devices. (Anadolu)
