The Department of Agriculture (DA) will expand its “Benteng Bigas, Meron Na” program to make affordable rice more accessible to low-income households in Metro Manila.
The agency plans to establish at least five P20 rice outlets in every local government unit in the capital region, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said Thursday. The initiative aims to bring rice closer to vulnerable sectors and ease financial burdens on families.
DA-Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service Director Junibert de Sagun said the full rollout is expected by the end of March 2026, timed with peak harvest periods to ensure adequate supply.
Priority groups for the program include senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, 4Ps beneficiaries, minimum wage earners, tricycle operators, farmers, fisherfolk, and other qualified residents.
On Wednesday, the DA convened a Technical Working Group meeting with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units to coordinate logistics, monitor distribution, and harmonize implementation across the region.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the agency will provide logistical and monitoring support to ensure the rice reaches intended recipients efficiently.
Officials emphasized that the expansion reflects coordinated efforts among national and local agencies to address food affordability and strengthen support for vulnerable communities in Metro Manila.
