The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is aiming to register at least three million overseas voters for the 2028 national and local elections.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed optimism about reaching the target, noting that 2028 will be a pivotal year as Filipinos elect a new president, vice president, and other officials.
“2028 is a very crucial year. 2028 is crucial in our political history because we are electing the president and vice president and other positions. This is very important,” Garcia said during the signing of a memorandum of agreement to establish overseas voter registration centers.
Comelec is targeting around two million new registrants when the overseas voter registration resumes on December 1. The registration period will run until September 30, 2027.
Garcia added that the poll body will seek assistance from other government agencies to help meet the goal.
The last overseas voter registration ran from December 2022 to September 2024 and recorded around 200,000 registrants. During the May 12 midterm elections, there were 1.241 million registered overseas voters.
