TOKYO – Japan is currently enduring a notable cold snap, characterized by significant snowfall in the northern and eastern regions, particularly along the Sea of Japan.
Additionally, snowfall is anticipated in the mountainous areas of western Japan, encompassing Kyushu and Shikoku, continuing through Sunday, as per the Japan Meteorological Agency’s report.
The combination of strong cold air and a winter pressure pattern has resulted in the lowest temperatures of the season across numerous areas. By 7:00 a.m. local time, Sapporo recorded a temperature of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, Morioka registered minus 3.0 degrees, and Aomori noted minus 2.4 degrees. In central Tokyo, the temperature fell to 6.3 degrees.
The accumulation of heavy snowfall in certain regions has prompted authorities to advise motorists to equip their vehicles with winter tires and to remain vigilant concerning weather updates. The onset of winter typically witnesses an increase in accidents, attributed to insufficient experience with driving on snowy roads.
Meanwhile, intermittent rain is impacting lowland areas in the Hokuriku region and Niigata Prefecture. Following the substantial rainfall already recorded, Niigata has issued landslide warnings in specific regions, necessitating increased caution.
